About Me

My name is Dr. Hoyin Chan. I am a Principal Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience working within NHS mental health services. My career began in frontline social work, supporting people in some of the most complex and vulnerable situations imaginable. That experience gave me a deep respect for the courage it takes to ask for help — and it shapes the way I work with every single client today.

Over the years I have worked across a wide range of specialist clinical settings, including cancer care, burns and plastics, respiratory, and HIV services. This means I have particular experience supporting people facing the psychological impact of serious or life-changing physical health conditions — an area that is often overlooked, yet profoundly important.

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and draw on a range of evidence-based approaches — including EMDR, CBT, ACT, and Compassion-Focused Therapy — as well as newer models that offer clients helpful insight into the deeper origins of their difficulties: why certain patterns keep repeating, where particular beliefs about themselves first took root, and what has been quietly driving their experiences long before they were able to name it. Together, these approaches allow me to build a treatment plan that is tailored to you. No two people are the same, and I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

In our sessions, I will never push you somewhere you're not ready to go. My approach is gentle, collaborative, and led by you. Many clients tell me they were surprised by how quickly they felt at ease — and by how much became possible once they did.

Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or carrying something you haven't been able to put down?

Maybe you're living with depression that has slowly drained the colour from daily life. Anxiety that follows you into every room — at work, in relationships, in quiet moments when you wish your mind would just rest. A deep, persistent sense that you are not enough, or a pattern of repeating the same painful cycles in relationships no matter how hard you try to break free.

For others, it's something more specific — a life-changing health condition that has turned your world upside down, trauma from the past that keeps finding its way into the present, or a high-functioning anxiety that nobody around you can quite see, but that quietly gets in the way of living the life you want.

Whatever has brought you here — this is a place where that is taken seriously.

You don't need to have reached a crisis point to deserve support. You don't need to have everything figured out, or even know exactly what is wrong. Many people who come to me have spent a long time questioning whether their difficulties were "bad enough" to warrant help — and whether therapy was really for someone like them. More often than not, that question alone is reason enough to reach out.

Taking this first step is an act of courage, and I don't take that lightly. I offer a safe, warm, and genuinely unhurried space where we can explore your experiences together — without judgement, without pressure, and entirely at your own pace. My aim is not just to help you manage difficulties, but to help you understand yourself more deeply, and to reconnect with a sense of clarity, confidence, and self-worth that may have felt out of reach for a long time.

Comments from previous clients:

"Thank you for the huge growth you have helped me to achieve, and the trauma you have helped me to unpack and move on from"

"Comparing myself now to when we started our therapy sessions, I feel so much more confident, independent, and authentic to myself, and have moved on from a constant state of fear and uncertainty, to being more calm and content in daily life"

"your approach created a safe space for me to process my trauma, and I’ve gained tools and clarity to navigate challenges more confidently"

"Working with Hoyin has been really valuable, helping me understand the roots of my anxiety and build genuine confidence in myself and my relationships. His approach and use of Internal Family System & EMDR have given me lasting tools to stay balanced, self-aware, and grounded in daily life."

" I didn’t expect to resonate with someone as quickly as I did with you and that made me feel safe to really do the inner work which was challenging but meaningful.

The clients I work with...

Many of the people I work with are hard working, capable individuals who carry a great deal — professionally and personally. They are expected to problem-solve, to perform under pressure, and to keep things together. From the outside, their lives often look like success. On the inside, something isn't quite right, and it has been that way for longer than they'd like to admit.

If that resonates, you are far from alone. And the same drive and self-awareness that has served you well in your career and personal life can, in the right space, become a real strength in therapy too.

I work with adults and older adults on a wide range of difficulties, including:

  • Depression and low mood

  • Anxiety, worry, and panic

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress (PTSD)

  • Low self-worth and self-esteem

  • Relationship difficulties and painful patterns

  • Life-changing or chronic physical health conditions

  • Medical trauma — following diagnosis, treatment, or surgery

  • Performance anxiety — interviews, presentations, exams

I offer secure online therapy to adults across the UK, with limited face-to-face sessions available in South Manchester. Sessions are available in both English and Cantonese. My practice is well-suited to those self-funding or using private health insurance, and I am happy to provide documentation to support insurance claims where required.

If you're curious about whether therapy might help, the first step is simply a free, informal conversation — no commitment, no pressure, and no obligation. Just a chance to talk.

It’s important to note that my practice focuses on guided self-discovery and therapeutic growth. While I am committed to supporting my clients, I am unable to provide crisis intervention. If you are currently experiencing a mental health crisis, I encourage you to reach out to dedicated crisis services or emergency support for immediate help.
